Emotional Artificial Intelligence (EAI)

Can machines understand what we feel? This course explores the emerging field of Emotional AI — technologies designed to detect, interpret, and respond to human emotions. From facial recognition to voice analysis, from healthcare applications to algorithmic bias, we examine how these systems work, where they are used, and what risks they carry. Structured in three modules and nine units, the course covers the scientific foundations of emotion detection, real-world applications across sectors such as education, marketing, and mental health, and critical issues including surveillance, discrimination, and manipulation. Designed as a cross-disciplinary cultural module for computer science students, it draws on psychology, philosophy, and ethics to provide the broader perspective future engineers need. Assessment is based on a guided essay. No prior knowledge of human sciences is required — only curiosity and critical thinking.
