This module provides a motivating introduction to application domains and scenarios of interest for a novel distributed algorithmic framework in which a team of autonomous systems cooperates to achieve a common goal. Distributed autonomous systems find application in several domains ranging from data analytics and decision making to smart mobility and mobile robotics. In these domains, large-scale teams of cooperating agents aim at solving optimization, learning and control problems by local interactions without a central coordinating unit. The module starts from an excursus of the main technology developments leading to the distributed computing paradigm in the Control Systems community. Then, it provides an overview of how problems of interest in decision making, cooperative robotics and Artificial Intelligence can be cast into a distributed algorithmic framework.
