European Health Data Space (EHDS)

A new regulatory framework adopted by the EU that provides common rules and infrastructure for the sharing and secure reuse of electronic health data across Member States. EHDS supports both primary use (healthcare delivery) and secondary use (research, innovation, policy) under harmonized conditions. The European Health Data Space (EHDS) formally entered into force on

March 26, 2025, after being published in the Official Journal of the European Union on March 5, 2025. This date marked the beginning of the transition period, with implementation occurring in phases.

Full application of primary use (e.g., patient summaries) and secondary use (e.g., research) will happen gradually, with key milestones in 2029 and 2031.
