Your elderly mother lives alone and suffers moderate depression which is easily remedied by a short telephone call from you. The problem is, you cannot be calling all the time. But, an AI agent trained to speak as you do and with your voice could fill the gaps. You could arrange for automatic calls, and your mother would never know the difference. She would only know she is happier. Do you do it?
There is no right or wrong answer, but there are better and worse understandings of what is at stake. By investigating the principles of AI ethics and their applications in the real world, we will learn how to understand and justify the difficult human decisions surrounding today’s technology.
